What is Fatigue?
• Failure occurrence due to dynamic and fluctuation loading is called fatigue.
• Fatigue has become more common due to use of greater amount of equipments and structures in the development of bridges, automobiles, pumps, turbines etc.
• It is stated that fatigue accounts about 90% of all service failures due to mechanical causes.
• It usually occurs after lengthy period of repeated stress or strain cycle.
• Following factors are causes of fatigue failure viz. maximum tensile stress of high value, large enough variation in applied stress, sufficient large number of cycles of applied stress.
• Fatigue behavior can be classified into two domains viz. low cycle fatigue and high cycle fatigue. The figure-1 below depicts the same.
Low cycle fatigue
Following are the characteristics of Low Cycle Fatigue.
• It is associated with relatively high loads.
• It produces elastic strain as well as plastic strain during each cycle.
• This type of fatigue lives are relatively short.
• Low cycle fatigue domain occurs at less than 104 to 105 cycles (N < 104 to 105 cycles).
High cycle fatigue
Following are the characteristics of High Cycle Fatigue.
• It is associated with lower stress levels.
• In high cycle fatigue, deformations are totally elastic.
• This type of fatigue lives are relatively longer.
• In this type, large number of cycles are needed to produce fatigure failure.
• High cycle fatigue is associated with fatigue lives greater than 104 to 105 cycles (N > 104 to 105 cycles).
