Analog instrument vs Digital instrument-Difference between Analog instrument and Digital instrument

This page compares analog instrument vs digital instrument and mentions difference between analog instrument and digital instrument.

Analog instrument

analog instrument

Definition: The instrument which gives output that varies continuously as quantity to be measured is known as analog instrument.

EXAMPLE of analog instruments:
• Deflection type pressure gauge.
• Thermocouple as shown in figure-1 which gives analog signal as output.
• Analog Multimeter

Digital instrument

digital instrument

Definition: The instrument which gives output that varies in discrete steps and only has finite number of values is known as digital instrument.

EXAMPLE of analog instruments:
• Revolution Counter: rotating shaft of it produces a digital signal as shown in figure-2.
• Digital Multimeter
