Advantages of Vortex Flowmeter | disadvantages of Vortex Flowmeter
This page covers advantages and disadvantages of Vortex Flowmeter. It mentions Vortex Flowmeter advantages or benefits and Vortex Flowmeter disadvantages or drawbacks.
Introduction:
The vortex flowmeter uses obstruction across the pipe bore at right angle of flow of fluid.
When the fluid flows, vortices are shed from sides of the body of meter.
The shedding frequency is proportional to velocity of the fluid.
Following relationship between vortex shedding frequency (St) and fluid velocity (U) is used in
working of Vortex flowmeter.
➤ St = (f x d)/U
Where,
f = Vortex shedding frequency
d = Width of shedding body
U = Fluid velocity
Following are the typical features of Vortex flowmeter:
• Design pressure used : 138 Bars
• Design Temperature: -2000C to 4000C
• pipe sizes: 15 mm to 300 mm (1/2 in. to 12 in.)
• Fluid types: Gases (clean and dirty), clean fluids
Benefits or advantages of Vortex Flowmeter
Following are the benefits or advantages of Vortex Flowmeter:
➨It offers high accuracy (about 1% or better).
➨It supports higher range.
➨It is very simple in construction.
➨It works well for both liquids and gases.
➨It does not require complex pressure impulse lines.
➨It is less sensitive to wear.
➨It does not require need for compensation of fluid density in
volumetric flow measurement.
Drawbacks or disadvantages of Vortex Flowmeter
Following are the disadvantages of Vortex Flowmeter:
➨At lower rates, pulses are not generated. Hence flow meter
can read low value or sometimes zero.
➨Vibration of meter can cause error in accuracy.
