Advantages of Ultrasonic Flowmeter | disadvantages of Ultrasonic Flowmeter
This page covers advantages and disadvantages of Ultrasonic Flowmeter. It mentions Ultrasonic Flowmeter advantages or benefits and Ultrasonic Flowmeter disadvantages or drawbacks.
Introduction:
Ultrasonic transducers such as piezo-electric crystals are used in the flowmeter
to measure average velocity along the path of ultrasound waves.
It calculates average of difference in measured transient time between pulses propagating
into and opposite to the direction of flow. There are various ways crystals are placed
for flow measurement. The input and output has linear relationship.
Benefits or advantages of Ultrasonic Flowmeter
Following are the benefits or advantages of Ultrasonic Flowmeter:
➨It does not obstruct path of fluid flow.
➨The output is independent of viscosity, density and temperature of fluid.
➨It can be used for bidirectional flow.
➨It offers very good dynamic response.
➨The output is in electrical form which can be interfaced for analog/digital readouts.
➨It offers higher accuracy of the order of +/-2% of full scale.
Drawbacks or disadvantages of Ultrasonic Flowmeter
Following are the disadvantages of Ultrasonic Flowmeter:
➨It is higher in cost.
➨It is complex in design.
➨Acoustic parts are expensive.
