Following are the communication tests usually carried out by wireless equipments.
Transmitter Tests: The purpose of transmitter tests is to assure that transmitter part of the communication system is functioning as desired. The transmitter is used to transmit the signal using RF antenna. The common transmitter tests include power spectrum, VSWR, operating frequency, gain, harmonics output, spurious output etc.

Antenna Tests: The purpose of antenna tests is to assure that antenna provides required gain and will generate appropriate radiation patterns as per antenna under design. The common antenna tests are radiation pattern, directivity, gain, bandwidth etc. Radiation patterns are of two types viz. near field and far field. The other tests include EMI (Electromagnetic Interference), EMC (Electromagnetic compatibility) etc.

Receiver Tests: The purpose of receiver tests is to assure that receiver part of the communication system is functioning as desired. The receiver is used to receive the signal from RF antenna. The common receiver tests include input power, sensitivity, gain, noise figure, image rejection, blocking, ACPR, ACLR, third order intercept point etc.

Following are the most common wireless communication equipments used for various RF and baseband tests.

Signal generator : The signal generator generates radio frequency signal as per user configurations. There are two common types of signal generators viz. scalar and vector. It is used to provide complex RF signal as input for testing communication receiver. It has built-in sweep generation and AWG (Arbitrary Waveform Generation) functionalities.

Signal analyzer: The signal analyzer analyzes radio frequency signal as per user configurations. It is used for testing communication transmitter. The test and measurement companies such as R&S, NI, Keysight and Anritsu are developing signal generator and signal analyzer equipments as per various wireless standards viz. wlan, wimax, gsm, lte, 5G etc. Refer difference between VSG vs VSA >> for more information.

power meter: It is used to measure absolute RF power. It usually comes with power sensor. It is available in various sizes and configurations. Power meters provide either analog reading or digital reading. It measures power in dBm. The dBm and dBW are the units of power.

Spectrum analyzer: It is a frequency domain equipment which displays frequency on X-axis and amplitude or power on Y-axis. It is used for frequency measurements, harmonics and spurious measurements.

Frequency counter: It provides frequency output in digital read out format as per its design.

Function generator: It is basically a signal generator which is designed to generate sine waves, square waves, triangular waves etc. as per user defined frequency range. It has output impedance of about 50 Ohm typically.

Network analyzer: It is designed to analyze linear RF circuits. There are two types viz. scalar and vector. Refer SNA vs VNA >>

Field strength meter:It is a portable device which is used to detect the presence of RF (Radio Frequency) signals near antenna. It provides strength of the EM waves reaching the meter. It uses vertical whip antenna.
